What can happen when a rifle blows...

These are some GRUESOME pictures that were emailed to me of what can happen when a rifle, in this case a Savage Model 10MLSS .50 caliber muzzleloader rifle, blows up. The specific reason is unknown however there are a couple of thoughts as to how this occurred.

There was the possibility of an object or some other kind of obstruction in the barrel or perhaps too hot of powder, this muzzleloader uses smokeless powder, perhaps the same amout of smokeless powder was used as black powder... The instruction reads "Your 50 caliber Savage Model 10ML muzzleloader has been designed and built specifically to shoot clean burning, non-corrosive powder. Loads should be checked by weight carefully on an accurate smokeless powder scale. never use black powder volumetric measure with smokeless powder. if using "LEE" dippers follow instructions for filing and leveling charge and periodic checking on a scale..."

Jerome the rifle blowing up really causes a painful damage and leaves one handicapped, one has to be very particular in firearm usage .

And then there is just careless - leaving a bore sight laser in the muzzle of the rifle and going to the range.

When these photos were sent to me, I had to wonder: Did this guy know anything about firearms?

That's a pretty graphic example alright.. Because of the wording I think he just put any 'smokeless' available w/o reading the whole instructions. Either way I bet there'll be one heck of a lawsuit.
Too bad because Savage builds some accurate firearms.

I have read the bore site pictures have proven to be bogus.

The others make my stomach turn over and my thumb hurt.
This happened to me while duck hunting. In the heat of the moment i failed to properly clear the barrel after a squib load. Cost $21,000 and 1 fine old shotgun.

Thunder head, Wow no wonder why your thumb was hurting, sorry bringing back some bad memories. I hope that everything has healed well and that you have regained the full use of your thumb. Jeez for $21,000, i hope your thumb is bionic . The truth is that accidents do happen and we can never be too vigilant or cautious.

Man you got lucky there. I think you should change your moniker to Thunder hand. I could not resist! Seriously I hope that you're OK after that nasty blow.

Thumb is about 85% what it used to be, Lost some range of motion and some gripping power. It dosent realy keep me from doing anything i would normaly do.

The pics are 2 weeks after, once the cast was removed. Blast broke the bone and almost blew it off. Also dislocated some of the finger joints.

I did get a built in barometer out of the deal. I can pretty much tell you when a strong front is moving in by the throbbing in my hand.

Its good that you have the hand working all normal must be damn painful experience , take care

Sorry about your hand.

The two bore sight pics shown on this thread are not bogus. The incident happened at the range I shoot at, about 2 mile from my home.
