Bow only and need close shot
When we go to SA in 2014 I am going with bow only. My ultimate shot range will be 15-20 yards. I do plan to sit the hides, taking pictures and movies while waiting for my animals to come in. I also will have reading material with me.
Stretch does want to try to do some spot and stalk, and if I get my animal before he does I will go with him. I guess I am more comfortable hunting from the hide as I am a rookie and want a very close range.
I also plan to take a notebook and keep a journal throughout our hunt so we will have memories in writing when they are fresh and don't have to try to remember everything a week or 2 later.Alles van dies beste!!

Out of 6 animals my longest shot was 23 yards. Shouldnt be a problem. If the water is too far slide the mineral rock or whatever they use closer too you.
You have plenty of time before 2014 to extend your range too. I practice from 60 yards. It makes 30 yards seem like a pot shot.I have walked in the tracks of the elephant, heard the lion roar and met the buffalo on his terms. I shall never be the same.

That is the truth. Practice at 2x your maximum effective range and you will quickly find yourself having to shoot even farther to challenge yourself. Sliding shafts together regularly at a comfortable range is not only hard on fletches it feeds an ego far more than it improves marksmanship.
The journey is the reward.

Most opportunities from out of a well constructed hide will be close, you can even have the outfitter/ph place you in those hides which has the water and or feed under your 20 yards maximum range. But that being said, you still have plenty of time before your trip, I would suggest you spend as much time as possible on the range shooting, you will soon become efficient at slightly longer which will give you more shot opportunities should an animal you really like be further than 20 yards and you will find that by shooting at longer ranges while you train you will become much more proficient at the closer distances.

Thanks all,
I have been shooting over the last couple of years, with Stretch. I have shot out to 30 and once even to 40. I do fairly well to 30, so I will continue to practice at this more this year. As I progress, and get my bow weight up, I will try to go out to 40.
We shoot at home and up at our cabin. Home we usually do 20 & 30 yards, at the cabin we can go out farther because we have more room and a much larger yard to set up. With such an early spring we have already started shooting.
Thanks again

Packsy, As an avid bowhunter I have kept a journal for over twenty years and scribbled many times in it while sitting on stands from turkey to moose. Your post made me take a look at it and go back over twenty years. It really does bring back the memories. A great idea for anyone who wnats to go down memory lane, when the memory isn't as sharp as it used to be!
