Favorite broadheads?!?!

As bowhunters, we all like to experiment with different gear and find what works best for us. I have been doing that with broadheads for some time now and have selected a few of my favorites for compound and my recurve.

What do you guys like? 2,3, or 4 blade? Fixed or mechanical or slip cam?

For my compound, it is tough to beat the good old fashioned muzzy 125 grain three blade. It is just an amazing head with great blood trails and durability that is unmatched.

For my recurve, i like the silverflame 210 grain two blade and the Muzzy Phantom in 220 grains.

What works for your setup?

Not a real experienced bowhunter Tom, but I used Wac Em broadheads to take my elk this fall. I'm only pulling 58# or thereabouts and the arrow had a 28 yard flight. It penetrated in between two ribs and hit a rib on the offside where it stopped, piercing both lungs. The elk went about 75 yards or so and piled up. Not much of a blood trail I must say, but I didn't need one either. I don't know that there was a drop of blood in that elk that did not end up in the pool under the vitals. The sights on my bow only needed minor adjustment from where they were for field tips and the broadhead tipped arrows grouped very well.

3 blade, 100 grain types by the way.

I have taken Lion, Giraffe, Eland and everything down to a duiker size with thunderheads. We used a different brand for Buff, but Thunderheads have tipped my arrows literally hundreds of successfull times on African game.

As the name applys i have been using Thunder heads for 10+ years. Just cant beat them on thin skinned animals. I do use cut on impact Montec G5s for hunting wild boar. I get better penetration with them on the tougher hided animals.

I use mostly 3 Blade 100 grain Thunderheads, but have used Rage, Rockets and Satellite broadheads. I like the Rage a lot...but because of regulations and laws...use mostly Thunderheads.

I've been bowhunting for almost 40 years and in that time I've tried quite a few heads. I used Thunderheads for quite a few years but found that I didn't always get an exit wound on larger animals like moose and elk.
When I am using heavy arrows and lower arrow speeds, like with my recurve or older compounds, I've had great success with the old cut on contact bear heads. With my faster bows, I find that the larger heads are almost impossible to tune. A broadhead that is flying straight will ALWAYS penetrate better than one that is wobbling. For the last few years I have been using Slick-Trick cut on contact heads and have had complete pass throughs on every animal. The wounds are not as large as they are with some heads, but two holes are better than one.
Though I havn't used the Rage myself, The wound seems huge but penetration may not be as good as desired. I could be wrong about this but these are my observations.

I was using G5 strikers, but had several break between the threads and head. I'm now shooting 100gr Muzzy Phantom MX and really like the blood channels they leave and the cut on contact gives great penetration for my wifes lower poundage bow.

Well I have been shooting 3 different broad heads this year.

1st Muzzy 125gr it was very effective got a pass trough I did have problems getting them to group though .



2nd German Kinetics 180gr it simply blew through (penetration is no problem) the gemsbuck and they group very well I would have to say that even though the gemsbuck expired in sight there was not a lot of blood it was a lung shot but I just expected more blood?



3rd The Rage 125gr well they sure cut something up I can see problems with penetration since my bow is set at 82 pounds and I took this zebra on 50 yards but unfortunately did not get a pass trough but there was no shortage of blood. This was a lungs shot as well.



Out of all 3 I would have to say, for the guy who comes to Africa on a plains game hunt and want’s to have confidence in his equipment Rage would be the way to go they just group really well and as most know shot placement is key on African game it just helps when you are grouping really well it is a big confidence builder for me?

I have shot many brands over the years. Started with Thunderheads, then Spitfires (in hind sight this was a mistake, in my opinion), then Muzzy 3-blade, then Rocky Mountain Snypers (very similar to Rage).

For my trip to Africa last summer I wanted to go back to a fixed blade design and I chose the Shuttle T-Lock 100 grain head. They performed flawlessly on all of the animals that I took, with 5 full pass throughs, and 2 with entrance and exit wounds where the arrow got hung up on the exit, and one that buried in the offside shoulder (eland). I could not have asked for better.

While I was in Africa my PH really talked up the Rage heads, so when I got back I gave them a try on whitetails back home. I killed a nice buck this year with a complete pass through. I think I will continue to use them here in the states.

I also used the Muzzy 125 grain 2/4 and 3-blade broadheads with good success but with them I had some arrow tuning work necessary.
I used one time the Jakhammer wasp mechanicals successfully on a warthog.
They did the job but the blades where bend because the broadhead hit the rips, so I had to exchange the blades.
The ABC broadheads I used one time succesfully in Africa but after the kill the blades where also not useable anymore and had to be exchanged.
The last five years I bowhunted successfuly with the 125 grain Silverflames and the G5 Tekan II mechanicals.
Both worked great without any difference compared to shooting field points when practicing.

For me and since 17 years of bow hunting, I really like the "THUNDERHEAD 100 grain three blades" ALWAYS THREE BLADES (with my PSE 73 POUNDS and at 29 inches draw, that is also important to know the draw and the power of the couple : bow-hunter to take a decision on the brodhead) on all the different type of animal except for the buffalo I used the MAGNUS STINGER.

Fell in love with Rage broadheads about a year and a half ago, they IMO have no faults. I use to use Rocket sidewinders and hammerheads, which there is nothing wrong with them, just seems like Rage give you alot more blood, I know thats impossible but, that's what it seems like.

I've used 3 blade cut on contact broadheads for years. I'm currently using the G5 Montec SS and the Shuttle T Lock. Both fly very well for me. Recently a lot of people have been bragging up the VPA Terminator broadhead that is CNC machined and not cast like the G5 which supposedly solves the problem of the shank breaking on the G5. Started out with Thunderheads but I can't get them to fly well with my set up, but a great broadhead.

I use Shuttle t-lock and have had real good luck. It is usually a pass through on every animal that I shoot. Look at the exit wound on last falls Antelope.

I've used Rage, Muzzy, Spitfire, German Kinetic and Thunderhead, and I'll stick to the Thunderheads.

The 2 Bladed German Kinetic Silverflame is brilliant, but they're hard to find, and expensive to lose. Worth it on expensive animals, but I trust the Thunderheads for everything else

That is very reassuring that you were seeing a pass through with the German Kinetics Broadheads on a Gemsbok. And also nice to note that they group well.

I look forward to seeing what the 220 grain GK's do.

When hunting DG I would use nothing ells, they might be a bit expensive but one thing is for sure they get the job done!

The German Kinetics is also a great broadhead to use on Giraffe.

Hi fellow hunters,

From my experience a good fixed 3 blade broadhead always works better on our African game. I've seen to many animals wounded when trying a quartering away shot with michanicals. My personal choise is the G5 montec and one never can go wrong with good old Mussy that enables exeptional penetration and ads to a good blood trail.

When it comes down to the heavy and dangerous of our spiecies the German Kinetics (2 blade) would be the one top of the list.

German Kinetic Silverflames are the only ones i trust...

no problems with them at all, they fly true and they are very tough

i would not like to use any king of 3 or 4 blade bh, i just dont trust and like them.

I tried a bunch in 30 years of bowhunting and always come back to Thunderheads 100 and 125s. They never fail to group and fly straight and true. Not to mention they are relativly inexpensive compared to some others. I think too many of us archers fall prey to the Ad Hype for new products, I have plenty of times.
