Last of the Botswana Elephant Hunts?
I just finished a fantastic elephant hunt through Intrepid Safaris Africa with Johan Calitz Safaris in Botswana.
I hunted with PH's Harry Fourtie of Intrepid and Louis Pansegrouw with Calitz. The hunt was everything a hunter could wish for. We saw over 133 bulls in twelve days. I took the 120th bull which was the largest with tusk of 57 and 55 lbs. respectively. We saw a lot of other game including roan, giraffe, steinbok, gemsbok, eland, buffalo, warthog, hyena, painted dog, leopard and lion. This was the most roan I had every seen on a concession but elephant was the only thing on the menu. I will submitt a detailed account of the hunt of the hunt at another time.
It is a real shame about Botswana closing hunting particularly elephant as there are a LOT of elephant there! Let's hope the reopen in the future and not go the way of Kenya with the poachers taking all the elephant after the hunters concessions have left.
