I just heard from my Medicare Advantage insurer that the only coverage my policy helps with would be Emergency Room charges only. Everything else is out-of-pocket to me. Gulp. Does anyone sell med coverage while I am there hunting? About 10 days. What say you? Thanks...

I've used Medjet Assist.
Not medical coverage, but evac insurance all the way home.
That can keep the costs down.

Our memberships start at $119/week and provide coverage for up to $500,000 worth of your evacuation costs from the bush back to your home country hospital of choice. Unlike other providers, you don't have to get yourself to a hospital and be be certified by a physician prior to evacuation.
A question I posed to my insurance company. What a surprise I got. I have medical coverage in Africa! There is a in Network clinic/hospital in Pietermaritzburg in KZN where my base camp is. Also, to many to list, in Network clinic/hospital in Johannesburg and I have the names and addresses. Three in Pretoria. Who would of thought! Good thing I called. Non-participating I am covered for EM-room only at 80/20. In-patient I need to get pre-authorized but should not be a problem, even have a collect phone number to call. What service.
Now in Namibia I am not so lucky. There are no in network clinics/hospitals.
One things is, to have a good credit card or two or three if you need services or hospitalization and are not covered by insurance.
In Africa, hospitals are called clinics, just to clarify that.

I had global rescure when I went to Namibia. My federal blue cross said I would be covered there like I am here. Where I was at in Namibia seemed a whole lot more accessable than when I hunted elk on horseback in the Bridger Wilderness of Wyoming. It would have been tough getting out of there if you were hurt bad.They say that Namibia medical care is on par with western Europe. So I quess it is up to the individual.
I recently went to Zimbabwe on a cape buffalo trip and I got a policy with Global Rescue beforehand. I highly recommend it, since they will pick you up wherever it is needed, be it in an emergency room, or out in the bush. A policy for the two weeks I was there did not cost very much, and was well worth the peace of mind that came with it.

IMO Global Rescue is much better than Med Jet. They will come get you just about anywhere.
However it is not medical insurance as per the original post. If you are having a heart attack you cannot be evacuated to the US for treatment. Same goes for many other accidents or illnesses. Check with your health insurance provider. Buy rider or separate policy if it makes you more comfortable. Some policies will reimburse you for hospital stays abroad but it will be out of pocket for you until then.
Yes, thanks Mike70560, i wasn't trying to imply that it's regular insurance. I'm sorry if I did. It will help defray the costs of a serious emergency by handling the evacuation, but you may end up needing a special policy to handle treatment abroad.
