First African Safari - Shipment of Trophys
My Son and I will be making our first African Safari to SA July 2012.
We will have the taxidermy done in the US.The question I have is can I have the hides and horns shipped directly to me so I can then decide which local Taxidermist to use? Or is their some USDA regulations that stipulate otherwise.
Please advise.

I haven't done that, but I do believe you can. I've read a number of times of guys having the hides/horns in their possession for sometimes even years before having the taxidermy done. You may want to give a call to one of the clearing agents to get the direct poop on the matter.
I used Hunter's International to clear my trophies. They're a friendly group of folks there. If you call them ask for Maria Felix, I'm sure she'll answer your question and perhaps impart other bits of wisdom to help you plan this. Website is below...

Yes. I've cleared all my shipments myself. They don't have to go through a taxidermist.

This can certainly be done but if you plan on it taking a while (especially years) then it would be best to have the hides tanned immediately to prevent any degradation of the skins. Wildlife Fur Dressers in California and The Wildlife Gallery in Michigan are reputed as a couple of the top tanneries for African specimins in the US and both can handle the import for you. Wildlife Fur Dressers is quite a bit cheaper and is used by many top Taxis.
Any reputable Taxi will gladly deduct the cost of tanning from their price with hides from either of these tanneries.
