NEW ON DELTA INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS: Delta Economy Comfort Seating
A whole new world of travel comfort takes off in summer 2011 with the introduction of Economy Comfort seating on our long-haul international flights. Early boarding gives you extra time to find your seat and get situated. Stretch out with up to four inches additional legroom. Recline 50% further than standard Economy Class seating. Then enjoy complimentary beer, wine, and spirits along the way. Try it and see how the idea of "affordable comfort" is no longer a stretch.
More info at: International Economy Comfort
This comfort seating is available now for flights beginning on June 1st and there are 36 of these seats on the Boeing 777 flight from Atlanta to Johannesburg and return – they are located in the front of the economy class cabin. With any economy class ticket these seats can be purchased from Delta. All of the reservations that I have looked at are running $160 per person each way. If you are a Diamond or Platinum Medallion member or have paid for a full fare (Y, B or M) class economy ticket then these seats are complimentary. Go to My Trips on Delta.com and enter your name and confirmation number and then view the seats that are available and it will give you the pricing for economy comfort if they are available.

The extra recline sounds great. The wife and I and 4 others just did PHX-JNB in early April on Delta. As a retired airline pilot I was "apprehensive" about the seating and service. Always went SAA before but since they went to Airbus aircraft and not 747s, I wanted some other steed to fly on (I just don't like Airbus airplanes and I flew them for years). I had been cautioned about Delta (I retired from another airline), anyway, I was plesantly surprised at the comfort of the standard seats (I'm 6'1") and the cabin service was just fine. The F/As were pleasant to deal with (this is a high seniority trip so they've all been with Delta for decades), very efficient on food service by quickly getting the entire cabin served and they had snacks and drinks available all night long if wanted. The food was just fine with the weak point being breakfast. Jusk OK. Lots of movies to watch all night long on individual seat monitors. Like I said, quite plesantly surprised. They never missed a beat on the baggage either. Having only one airline to deal with all the way I think is an advantage for baggage also. Don't cut the transfer time too short in Atlanta! Get there early in the day (take the first flight available from your home town and if you have 5 or 6 hrs to kill in ATL, get a day room at the Red Roof Inn right at the airport. There's food right next door and you can take a quick nap and shower before the 16 hr ride to Jo'burg. It helps tremendously.

Upgraded for our trip from Atlanta to J-burg this summer. Hopefully it will make a difference. Have gone on both SAA and Delta to J-burg in the past. I would have to agree with Cliffy that the food was better on Delta but the biggest difference for me is the 15 hours vs 20 hour flight time. Will let you know if the upgrade was worth it when we return.

Thanks for the comments! I bet I've had 50-60 clients sign up for the new Delta seating so I'm anxious to get some feedback - should get some by next week. Jacques ~ it's not too early to make plans for your marketing visit - that early January timeframe books up quickly with all the PH's coming over and also the holidays.
