Where do they get these guys?
I just phoned the local Cabelas to see if they had any .270 140gr TSXs in stock so my wife could pick them up while she was in the city. The GUN counter guy asked "what are those? Bullets?" ??????? Really?
Since they were out I phoned Wholesale sports and asked the same question from their GUN counter guy and he asked "who makes those? Hornady?" ?????? Really??? Heres your sign.
Where do they get these guys? I know all these guys aren't rock stars but come on, they should at least know something. Shouldn't they? The scary thing is, these are the people advising others on gun and shooting purchases. The journey is the reward.

tough to get good help when they pay minimum wage, might as well have called Walmart
The only time I get good service at these big stores is with a part time middle age guy, he is working part time to take advantage of the company discount, or the older guy who enjoys all things outdoors but doesn't want to really work anymore, but wants to still be active and involved with the outdoorsThere are three kind of people in this world, those that can count, and those that can't

BTW, if minimum wage people would show a little interest in their jobs and show some ambition, chances are they wont be making minimum wage for very long. Everybody has to start someplace you know! Everybody I ever knew started at the bottom and worked their way up. I started at $1.60 an hour in the mid 60's.
Trouble is nowadays is everybody thinks that starting wages are 100K a year. Wake up folks. You start at the bottom making minimum wage until you get with the program! Rant over.

When Cabelas was still privately held and they only had a few stores, I found their service/help to be as good as one could ever hope for. Then they went public and retail stores started popping up all over the country. With that massive expansion they of course had to hire more people, it seemed like that's when I started running into people of no use or limited use at their stores.
I find it hit or miss, sometimes it's a very positive experiences like ses mentions above and other times more like the Diamond's recent experience.Bonse Aba

After college it took me 4 years to break into my field and the rest of my career to get where I am today yet I still encounter many young workers bent on fast tracking to my level. For some reason they don't think it is fair that they cannot start at the top.
Just yesterday I had a guy ask me how to get a "job like mine". I replied "its simple, work hard for 20 years and make the most of your opportunities". Like all the rest Im sure he was looking for a shortcut or someone to talk to to make it happen instantly. I wish it was that simple, I would have done it long ago.The journey is the reward.

But of course on the other hand, we only just recently had Cabelas come to my home state with stores, one is only 40 minutes away. Before that, mail order only.
And per the minimum wage thing, who knows what they pay individual employees? As an example my daughter who graduated culinary school last year has been struggling like many people to find a good job, hit and miss. She recently made app at a place nearby that appears to be up and coming, and wham, got hired. She loves the place and expects to be paid minimum wage, at least for a while, and is happy as hell about it! Ya gotta start someplace, and verrrrry few start at the top or anywhere near it. Its gotta be earned.

alrigh , you pair have pricked my ears .
how many people work in these cabales stores ?
the biggest gunshop ive been into had 3 blokes working there
minuim wage ,don't know much about that , in my work its percentage of catch .
but the same thing we just give the new guy a starting percentage and tell them their share will go up as they learn the job .
best incentive l use is telling them im gunna pay em what they are worth .

You want action at Cabela's, Dick's or any other publicly held company? Don't send a complaint to customer service. Send an email to Investor Relations, tell them you're a shareholder and how you were treated. Ask them why? I had an issue with a Cabela's and did just that. Next day I got a phone call from the manager of the ENTIRE store apologizing for the incorrect info I got on the phone from a sales "associate". Short story, got an extra $100 off the shotgun I originally inquired about and eventually purchased from them. Company employees usually don't ignore the "owners".

Don't worry-once Obama raises the minimum wage you're sure to find smarter people back there

There are still people that think off shore drilling is something the Marines do! I went into a restaurant with my girlfriend at the time, who happened to be Russian. The waitress upon hearing her accent asked where she was from. My girl promptly replied " I'm from Russia". To which the waitress replied " OH really!! I have never been to that State before". That my friend is where this country is headed.
