Ruger New African Rifle

Been to the new Ruger web site and they have added the 416 ruger to the new african rifle. They have added a muzzle brake that can be removed and a forend tip. This is a pretty neat looking rifle. I also noticed that he 300 and 338 RCM's were only offered in the guide guns and the Alaskan model was no longer available in either 375 or 416 ruger. Glad I bought my 375 alaskan.

lwaters if you would post a pic of your 375 Alaskan I'm not sure I've ever seen one and love to look at guns.

I hate muzzle brakes. Had to sit next to one at the range today, nearly jarred my fillngs out! Hate them. I see they also have it on their new magnum rifle too.
See also that they dropped the 9.3x62 from the line, too bad. Have really pared down the chamberings on the No.1 rifle too! WTH is going on there?! The 1-A Light Sporter had one (1) chambering the .223!! Oy vay! I didnt see anything there I wanted!

I don't like their guide guns or their new American rifles, but hey the world is changing. So happy to have a nice collection of old guns....they may have crappy triggers but I'm use to them. Their Hawkeye's are nice and I love their Target rifles!

Ses, from what I heard they plan to offer different chamberings every year. If you didn't find anything you liked this year check back later.

Oh I look at their site regularly, just that I havent seen such a dearth of chamberings before. Wish they had kept the 9.3x62 though.

It seemed like the 9.3x62 had been growing in popularity, but you know Ruger they are hung up on their proprietary rounds....and I'm not a fan of any of them.

I have pics of my 375Ruger Alaskan, but I am not able to link a photo from Photobucket and for some reason I am not able to find the pic in my computer atm either..

My brother took the right Ruger African in 300 win mag, and I took a Ruger #1 in 300H&H mag for our plainsgame hunt in 2011. Both were great. I have thought about getting the african in 375 ruger left hand for me for quite some time. I like they added the fore end tip but could leave the muzzlebreak. I prefer the bolt to match the barrel but I guess I can have a gunsmith work on that.

Seems like I see more guys with muzzle brakes every year. I guess Ruger has decided to add the detachable brake to hit that segment of the market. If you were going to have a brake installed anyway, the Ruger would be even a bigger bargin than they already were.

I have met guys that were so afraid of the recoil that they had a brake on a .30-06.

Ok, I looked up the images of the muzzlebrake and think it makes the gun look ugly. Curious, why they got rid of the Alaskan in the 375 and 416....I know a lot of guys on here liked them???

Just in case someone missed it before; I hate muzzlebrakes! PH's dont like them either. At the very least they need to be removable and apparently Ruger has done that.

I don't like brakes on a hunting rifle. Maybe if a shooter had a medical problem or was of very small stature it would make some sense, but I will not hunt with anyone that uses them.

Just as matter of interest. A smaller, lighter person is actually less affected (pain wise) by recoil than a big heavy person. The more weight behind the gun, the less the gun can move rearward, and thus hits the shooter harder.
My preferred method of dealing with the heavy kickers is to use a PAST recoil sheild that one wears while shooting from the bench, sometimes two for the gnarly ones. Been shooting my 1895 .405 Win lever rifle a lot lately and I wear the PAST on the bench for sure and my shoulder is still tender after 40 rounds. The gun even has a thin rubber recoil pad which offers some improvement over the steel plate it came with.
One of the hardest kickers I have had, was a Ruger No.1 in .450-400 with loads driving the 400 gr bullet to around 2250fps. That sucker gave me a recoil headache, and just generally beat hell out of me, and it no longer resides at this residence. Instead I have a .404 Jeffery on a CZ 550. Same power, much less felt recoil due to more weight and a much better recoil pad.

The Bean counters are getting ahold of ruger too. They use to make some really nice claissic looking rifles...now they are starting the laminate, removable mag...and a muzzle break crap...our American history of making nice guns...has gone to the way of the AR...stamp them out cheap...put a clip in it and and add on all kinds of sh*t on a rail and its tacktcool....

I'm not impressed...The African model is even cheap in my OP...the RSM was a safari rifle!!!

i asked one of the ruger people on their stand and he said that a lot of people had been asking for muzzlebrakes,and they are detachable. the guide gun replaces the alaskans and has a stock that is adjustable for length with spacers . it also is being made in the .416 ruger.

I guess, I'm old enough to not buy that line, thanks for asking though. I thought the Alaskan was a real "guide's gun". It was really streamline and compact. It looked like you could carry it anywhere. Technically the new guide gun isn't too different....who knows.
I like muzzlebrakes to a degree as long as the ports vent forward, away from the shooter. A lot of people hate them. I got my ears blasted by some one 2 years back. I can understand the "hate" part now. If you have one you have be careful with it, no one can be ahead of you or directly to the side!
