Remington 375 H&H

My problem with the 700 has only a little to do with the Push feed. Every 700 I have seen new in the last eight year has problems. The company is letting their great name and quality control go to hell. Now not all of these problems are dangerous, but some are very bad. I saw one brand new remington fired the by the new owner, one shot, and he worked the bolt to put in another round and the whole bolt assemby fell out in peices! I was shocked, now the new ower should have fully checked the rifle before the first trip to the range, but still bad. Other examples Are three rifles that came into our gun shop in 2008. All three would fire when the safety was pushed to "fire". One, a .300 Win Mag as I recall seized shut after a few rounds. Anyway I could go on, but the point is if going to spend thousands of $ on a trip, buy a quality rifle, and check it out very well, and have it gone over by a good gunsmith prior to the trip. Even if only for plains game why have the trip ruined by a rifle failure? Now this is not to say that the 700 is all bad. If I wanted to use a 700 for stuff that bites I would find an old one from the 70's and have it rebarrled to the caliber I wanted and a new stock and all that. With the used quality from that time the rifles were much better. I have had rifles break on hunting trips, I had a trip were I broke three expensive europen scopes, it is never a fun way to have a trip go. If I had had to stop a bear, or leopard, or whatever on those trips it could have gotten me killed, and I am not a fan of that!

I know everyone here is looking at the Rem 700 or a CZ 550 but take a look at the Savage 116SE Safari Express .375 H&H Mag not a bad rifle for the money of course I'm a Savage fan.

Buy the one without the muzzle brake, otherwise the PH will hate the fact you ever brought it. Don't know if they make the SE without it, but, a good smith could replace it with a threaded cap...

Just based on the loads shown; no game animal would know the difference if hit with either one. Differences in trajectory would be minimal also. Burn more powder, more recoil, less barrel life. Whats the point?

Sest is right... When you look at the two loads mentioned above, using the same powder the H4350, you end up using a lot more powder to gain 60fps. Just doesn't seem worth it to me.

Thats true if all you load is min loads I myself have never loaded a min load in my life not even for the wife.

a .375 RUM max load is 2733fps with 4995 pounds of energy

a .375 H&H max load is 2539fps with with 4294 pounds of energy

difference in speed is 194fps with a energy level difference of 701 pounds of energy now that may not sound like a lot but if I've got a Buffalo trying to run over me I want every pound of energy I can get without sacrificing accuracy but as I said in my other post thats just my Preference, and to each their own.

Going to Canada This May for bear and taking my Rem 700 PF 375H&H. Worked up a nosler accubond load so should be quite fun when the yank fires the cannon at camp. Dead is dead but were talking 500lbs blackies here. They will kill you just to eat you.

I own two 700s and have probably taken 150 head of game with them. I routingly whack 10 inch metal plates at 700 yards with ease....that is with my heavy barrel 700 .308 with handloads. Last year I used my 700 in 3006 to take plains game in Limpopo. You need to be aware of one issue with the 700. Through time, the bolt release latch can stick open due to accumulation of dirt and crud with use. If that happens you can lose your bolt, or while cycling a round it can fly back out of your hand on ejection. The remedy is to remove the bolt release, clean and polish it along with the slot in the receiver that it resides in. You do not necessarily need to remove the trigger group to do this.....IF you don't drift the trigger housing pin all the way out. You just need to drift it ever so slightly to remove the bolt release and its spring. The slot is easily cleaned with a solvent, and you can use fine emory cloth for polishing. For Africa, next time I will carry my Ruger Alaskan in .375 Ruger. It is CRF and has an excellent bolt stop and open sights. I handload for this as well. Hope this helps.

I'm a Winchester guy, but I bought a Rem. 700 .375H&H and it works just fine and shoots real fine too. I believe a CRF action is only needed it you will be shooting upside down or sideways where you need the positive feed.

If you are asking Partition, my hunt to Africa was fantastic. In fact my four heads will be arriving in a few days. The hunt was WAY different than what i grew up with...millions of unspoiled forest with no sign of fences anywhere..freedom to hunt, shoot, ride ATVs and that sort of thing. The hunting in the western end of the Upper Penninsula can be just plain brutally cold for most of the deer hunting seasons. But the amount of game seen in Africa is just amazing. BTW..we all know that U.S. Snipers use the 700, highly modified I would suspect. Nonetheless, it is a 700.
