Thanks for the apreciative comments Paul.
It weighs in at 9 1/2 lb's ready to go. I built it with DG in mind but circumstances have changed and it may not get there now. Only has a few goats to its credit.
25in barrel gets both the Woodleigh weldcore and RWS solids away at 2335fps.
I left off most of the fancy touches as far as engraving etc but spared nothing to ensure reliability. A nice stick of wood is all the fancy I need if everything works as intended.
Built a little brother for it that gets much more use here in NZ and is a 7x57 on a 1908DWM

Firstly, my apologies to Calle for hikacking his thread.
Thanks for your response, Von Gruff.
No intent to knock your piece, but 9 &1/2 lbs is FAR too much rifle for me to carry around for 5 months of the year, especially when I have a buff head on my shoulders !
Both of mine are aimed at coming in at under 8 & 1/2 lbs to facilitate portability, the Lott will have a 22" tube and the 500 a 20".
Engraving does little to enhance the performance of a rifle, function is everything to me, period.
Best of luck to you hunting with that 404 of yours.
Cheers,
Paul.

That is a great sounding recipe for your rifle Calle and the translations are perfectly clear. You have chosen a lighter profiled barrel than I did and that is the one thing I would change if I was to do it again. What length are you going to have you barrel cut to? Do you have a target weight for the completed rifle?

Feels great and I really look forward to see the final result.
The plan is that P-O will have it finished at the end of april next year.
The barrel will be 62 or 64 centimeters. We´ll make the final decision when it is mounted.
I don´t know about weight.
To me it dosen´t matter if it is 4,2 kilograms or 4,8.
I will carry it with a smile on my face anyway without complaining :-)
The checkering (nätskärning) will be 24 lines per inch and the woodpiece will be dark brown.
P-O made my Brno ZG 47 and I wanted the new rifle to like the it.
I will try to publish some pictures of it so you get an idea of what the 404 will look like.

The 404J is a Sterling cartridge of note.
This is a picture of a 458 of mine being built on similar lines to a WR425 which is a similar round to the 404.
I would also recommend a flip up night sight.

Now I'm thinking of making the stock without the chinpiece. Just a straight clean stock.
Is that part really necesarry ?

Here are a couple of pics from another site that I thought you might like Calle seeing as you intend to colour case your action. Tried to post a link to the site but because pof forum rules it was deleted (twice)
The bolt knob is a little less ball ended, as in flater than I like.

I really liked those pictures and they only made me realise I made the right decission.
I have found pictures of a Merkel KR1 that is treated the same way. It is a lot of metal on that action and it looks great with color case hardening.
We wont color case the bolt.
Since you have to heat the metal to 600 degrees before you cool it of it might bend just a little. And that is not good for precision.
And since it is the thing that moves back an d forward in a boltaction I guess the colour will wear of in a short time.
Maybe the bolt handle will be treated.
I have just send my GS the first part of the payment so it is on its way now.
Waiting.........
