.460 weatherby

IT IS A 460 WEATHERBY BY ASQUARE/SHARPS RIFLE COMPANY. AND I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANOTHER RIFLE SO BEAUTIFUL AND FUNCTIONAL. EVEN AFTER LOOKING AT RIFLES AT THE SAFARI GUN SHOW IN DALLAS FOR MANY YEARS.

I luv mine shoots well, great stopper, the recoil does not bother me at around 9lbs and without a muzzle break it still handles we, it should be fitted IMO.

I am around 268lbs and it recoils but the more you shoot it the better you'll handle it.

Hi Monish

I have a weatherby 460 mark v since 15 years now and i used it frequently on the field. Mainly in my home country, switzerland, where i killed several wild boars, red stags and even chamois. Of course it's a nonsense such a caliber for this kind of animals, but i just wanted to cummulate a lot of field experience with the rifle, before going to africa and face dangerous games. I think it's not a good idea to hunt dangeous animals with a gun you only know from the shooting range... So i ended up killing about 70 animals, between wild boars, red stags chamois and deers, before i could finally effort a safari on cape buffalo, which i had in april 2012.
the performance of the caliber is very good. I hit the buffalo in the mid of the shoulder from a distnce of about 80 meters (which is actually a too long distance) and he run for about 100 meters before stopping and standing with lowered head. There i finished him with another shot, which brought him down. So: good performance.
Honestly i can't understand all these complains about the recoil. I admit i'm a 187 cm tall guy with good 100 kg wheight, but i think the recoil is absolutely acceptable. While hunting one doesn't actually even feel it at all.
A final observation to the mark v rifle: in the remote case you have a stecher (second trigger, which decreases the pressure needed to release the shot from the first trigger), then let it be changed to a single direct trigger. The mark v with stecher tend to malfuntion, releasing the firing pin while you close the bolt action (especially when the weapon gets dirty). There is no risk of an uncontrolled firing, but you will not be able to fire when you need to do so, which may lead to a dangerous situation when facing a buffalo.

Agreed 100% I have taken multiple Buff Multiple Elle, and various other species with mine. I agree in that I truly do not understand what the fuss is about, if you shoot a 458 Lott, 470 N, 500 Jeffrey or any other large calibre and you are comfortable with them the 460 will not be a demon to shoot or handle.

As mentioned before the figures differ yes, but in reality there is very little difference in well fitted rifles... The latter I believe is a big factor.

Totally agree with the latter Jaco.
You really need a well balanced not to light rifle with a stock well fitted to the shooter when you shoot with a 460.
I think much of the reason for the bad reputation of being a shoulder destroyer is the many 460's made with totally crap stocks for that sort of recoil.

I am far from being recoil shy, but the gun that has given me the worst beating ever was a light rifle in 460 with a totally silly stock shape for such a cartridge.
I managed to put the shots where they should be on the range, but I very far from enjoyed shooting it.
The owner of the gun was not able to hit a barn at spitting distance with it.....
He asked me to test shoot the gun because he was sure something was totally wrong with the gun, mount or scope.
The macho was not able at all to admit that the recoil was way to much for him and he had the worst flinch I have ever seen.

I would have to agree, stock fit is "king". I recently tried a 30-06 that was 6 pounds....gun was too short for me, didn't feel right at all, could have carried the gun easily all day, but it didn't shoulder correctly!

Every gun has to fit right to meet it maximum potential for the owner!

IT IS CONTROLABLE AND A PLEASURE TO SHOOT......... AND ACCURATE......THE MIGHTY 460 HAS BEEN TAMED FOR ME. WOW WOW WOW I CANNOT REALY IN WORDS EXPLAIN MY HAPPINESS AFTER SUCH A LONG QUEST FOR A RIFLE THAT COULD TAME THE BIG 460, THE STOCK WITH VERY WIDE BACK END WITH A GREAT RECOIL PAD ART PUT ON IT, AND THE HEAVIER WEIGHT AND ANGLE OF THE RIFLE I THINK IS THE ANSWER..... NOTE IT DOES NOT I REPEAT NOT HAVE A MUZZLE BREAK ON IT......ART ALPHIN SHOULD GO DOWN IN HISTORY AS THE MAN THAT TAMED THE MIGHTY 460 WBY. Can someone please tell me why so many people are dead set against muzzle breaks. They are spoken about with this great hatred like it's some sin to have a break at the end of your barrel. I think they're one of the greatest firearms inventions ever. Is it the supposed increased noise level, the extra barrel length??? There are muzzle break designs out there that are no louder than a rifle without a break.

I have shot around them on rifles and shotguns (porting). They are loud to the folks beside/(to the side of) the shooter.
That's it. In fact it is Painful to me.
It is very much like being muzzle blasted.
Just my experience.

I have never encountered a MB that is the same as a firearm without.

what you have to remember is that they are usually on bigger calibre rifles that will be used for dangerous game, so your ph will usually be standing next to you not behind, and when you fire he will get blasted, so not very pleasant and can perforate the eardrum.....

I promise you that they increase the noise level. Some of the best constructed ones, don't increase it much for the shooter, but all of them increase it significantly for everybody around the shooter.
I have been the shooting leader(or whatever you call it where you live) at a shooting range for some years and I have experienced plenty of different muzzle breaks.
All shooters here use hearing protection, but we still need to make special arrangements and let the ones with muzzle breaks shoot alone or at least leave 2-3 spots empty on each side of the shooter because of how it affects the other shooters.
Luckily there are fewer and fewer muzzle breaks to see the last years.

I really feel sorry for a PH that gets a client with a gun with a muzzle break attached.

SORRY AH VETERAN. I REALY DID NOT MEAN TO IMPLY THAT MUZZLE BREAKS WERE BAD. I HAVE FOUND THAT DIFFERENT METHODS ARE PREFERRED BY DIFFERENT PEOPLE. FOR ONE, A PERSON MAY LOVE A FEATURE ON A RIFLE LIKE A MUZZLE BREAK AND I FEEL HUNTING AND SHOOTING IS A WONDERFUL SPORT AND NOT EVERYONE LIKES THE SAME THING. PERSONALLY I DO NOT CARE FOR THEM. BUT THAT IS JUST ME. THAT DOES NOT MAKE ME RIGHT. AND I APOLOGISE FOR IMPLYING THEY ARE BAD. BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE LOVE THEM.

You are a class act Jake. if you do hunt with a brake, make sure hunting companions or guide/PH is aware and is good with it. I'd put one on if only they had a silencing effect as well.

Muzzlebrakes suck IMO. The shooter may like them but everyone else around that shooter hates them, period. I have two rifles with brakes that came with them. An Armalite AR15 fitted with one during the 1994 AW ban and it shoots so good I refuse to take it off. And a PSL-54C "Dragunov" also fitted from birth, its not particularly noisy though.
As regards the big hunting rifles. If I cannot shoot that thing without a brake, I well get something I can shoot without a brake, as I just dont believe they belong in the field.
