Thank you Mannlicher, I definitely think you are correct in your assumption. I have looked again and as you said it must be the vz 33. As long it is a Mauser it is the best.... And then it is a .404 Jeffery, what a bonus, this rifle really shoots beautifully and is very accurate with open sights. I want to take more photos and upload it on the forum, I am currently building a shooting table and a rifle rest to assist in getting my scope on zero at 150 yards. I will upload some photos on the diy section.

Spike.t you need to shoot a .404 Jeff to understand why every hunter is always on the lookout for venerable .404 Jeffery, it is a dream to shoot, brass and bullets affordable, chamber pressure is the range of 42000 psi ( Garry rectify if I am wrong please?) It kills what you shoot and aim for. It kills easy, no fuss just deadly efficient, the rifle who tamed Africa, and all this it does in a nonchalant manner. It does not make unnecessary noise, it does what a hunter of dangerous game excpects of the rifle.

Gert i am sure it is very nice, a good friend who used to be a ph in zambia loved his one. i was just messing with Doc. i got into rigbys as i met paul roberts nearly 25 years ago and ended up with a 1940`s .275, the last .350 rigby he built before selling to the americans , a beautiful .470 which i sold in a brain dead moment! and i think my last in a line of 4 .416 rigbys i kept buying and trading back in. i nearly had him build me a .404 when he was using the jeffery name, but unfortunately never got around to it. maybe one day as i prefer the classic calibres.......

Good Evening Spike t, I am sure you will not have any trouble finding a buyer for such a great rifle, but I think our South African hunters will be out of contention , since our Rand is going down the dumps, I think we are going to break through the R15 a Dollar very soon. Our economy is in tatters , but I am sure you guys from abroad are smiling since your money is so strong...you can shoot a buffalo for a few dollars with your strong cuurency...

its just over 15 to the pound sterling, and just under 10 to the usd, so if it hits 20 to the pound things there will get very reasonable for us......

For sure a mil 98 action. It may be the angle of the photo but it looks to me as if perhaps the action may have been lengthened to accomodate the long round. .404's have been built on standard length actions as well but he ejection port area looks longer than std. Distance between the 2 action screws would be 7.75 inches app. for std., and the ejection port (opening)should measure about 3.1 inches. A loaded .404 round has to be angled rearward into the magazine to fit by a fair amount on a std 98 action. Nice rifle!

    Good Day to you Sestoppelman
Thank you, I will measure the action and give you the dimensions. It is a real old rifle, long history, but you need to shoot it to really appreciate it, the back-draft tugging on your shirt, blasting into your face, the big strong push driving you back wards is indeed a adrenalin rush, and it is incredibly accurate with open sights.

Beautiful rifle, and a rich history. Don't know that I would fire ammo that old, but, to each his own. Congrats on a classic piece of art.
