Ibex,
I shoot a 45-70 a lot (also .458 caliber) with 325gr bullets at around 1900 fps. I have yet to find an animal in the U.S. where that bullet stays in the animal. I also shoot a 430gr hard cast lead bullet (non-expanding) at around 1800 fps that is quite unstoppable on medium to large game (wild boar up to elk). The 325gr load I shoot is good out to around 200 yds (at least that is where I am comfortable shooting it), and the 430gr load I am comfortable shooting out to about 150 yds.
Seems to me that if one were to load 350gr, 400gr and 450gr bullets in a 458 Lott, it would do very nicely on any game. I think one could get a 350gr bullet up to around 2600 fps out of a 458 Lott. The way I see it that would be a good round to shoot anything out to 250 yds.
Hope this helps ....:) SCI, B&C, NRA, NAHC

I just took my 458 Lott up to Cape York (far North Queensland in Australia) and shot two scrub bulls and a few pigs with it using thin jacketed 405 gr projectiles made by an Australian company. Shots were taken from 30m out to around 130m and it performed very well. The only issue I have with the 458 Lott on medium game is that it is a little too much gun at both ends, I had a couple of pigs I nearly turned inside out, one shot through the chest lengthways was missing a fair bit of his hindquarters. That said, African plains game would generally have a thicker hide than an aussie feral pig so the issue would not be as much of a concern. I took the 458 for a bit of fun, but tend to think I would take one of my lighter recoiling flatter shooting rifles for an African plains game hunt.
Cheers

velocity in mine was kept down to a tad over 2300Fps with the 405 gr load

..I think Bangflop has the right idea there! I've never shot the 458 lott but shooting thse 2 bullets out of the 45/70 are quite deadly on any game! You throw a bullet the size of a small missle with lots of energy behind it, somethings going down! with those velocities the lott may even be quite comfortable to shoot vs. loading it to the hilt for dangerous game!

Its still a little uncomfortable to shoot, although it recoils alot less than it does with the fullpower 500gr loads.
With a 405gr pill loaded at 2300 Fps you are still a good 300-400 Fps in front of a 45/70 depending on the rifle/load. That said, most 458 Lotts are heavy rifles and the recoil out of a marlin guide gun can be stiff to say the least!
Cheers

It is no trick to get 2600 or 2700 fps (chronographed) with a 350 grain TSX and a plain old .458 Winchester and H4198 with acceptable pressures from my 22" barrel. What you do is crimp on the second groove, not the first one. The round will fit in a Model 70 magazine. With a CZ550, you can crimp on the third groove and still fit in the magazine. This effectively increases case capacity.
Note that the .458WM also has a lot of freebore for some reason, effectively increasing case capacity as well.
The 2700 fps load gives 5700 foot pounds at the muzzle. I've calcualated (but not verified--note that Barnes balistic coefficients are suspect) that this "pointed" bullet load gives 3000 foot pounds at 300 yards. Trajectory is within a gnat's eyelash of a 30-06 with 180s.
Sort of a .375 H&H on steroids.
