I am planning on headingto Africa in the spring of 2014 and am buying a Winchester Model 70 375 H&H Mag for the trip. I was wondering what would be the best size scope to put on it? I am thinking of a Leupold 2-7 or 3-9 but I am not sure. As I live and hunt in Alberta I would like the rifle to be versatile enough for Elk and Moose as well. Any suggestions?
You could use either one, I have the 2.5-8x 36mm Leupold on mine

I've used a leupold 3-9x40 and more recently a leupold 1.75-6 on my .375 H&H. Either you suggest should be fine for Africa or western hunting.

Meat78, I have 1-5's on both of my .375's but these are being used on buffalo, mostly at very close range, and for that they're great.
As I age I've noticed a higher/increased demand on my glasswear (scopes, I don't wear glasses !).
I have a new rifle in 9.3 coming soon and have decided to mount a 2-8x42 Zeiss Duralyt on it as a genreal purpose medium/large game rifle.
The big price to pay here is that they add 1 lb to the overall weight of your outfit and that needs to be considered if your starting out with a heavy peice, which the Winchesters tend to be.

I use a 1-3x20 for close work in thick jesse and a 4-12x40 for longer open shots on my 375. Both on Warne QR mounts. A 3-9x is probably your best all-rounder.
I am in the same boat as "Meat78". I am purchasing a .375 H&H and looking for a scope. I am leaning towards the Leupold VXR 1.25-4 with the FireDot 4 reticle. I am not planning on shots beyond 200-250 yrds with this rifle. Thoughts?
There is no reason to buy a high power scope, I like 6 power most of the time unless something is right up on me then a 2.5 power is fine. I love Leupold scopes! That being said when something is out there at 200 yds or more 9 power or more is nice.
i have a 2.2-9 power on my . 300 win but i dont think i have ever used it on more than 6 power, so i agree i dont think you need any scope that goes above 6 power on a .375.
I can't add anything. A good quality 1.5 - 4 or 1.5-5 up to a 2.5-8 will do what you need. You definitely do not need anything more. I have shot quite a few elk and moose with the .375 and really, you don't need anything more than 4 power to whack those big ungulates all the way out to 300 yards or so.
I put a Leica 2.5-10x42 on mine with the #1 reticle. I am very, very happy with the setup.
As others have stated-I too am in the .375 market. While I hope to use it on a Buff someday-I want one cuz I think they are cool! And would probably shoot more whitetail than anything. I've been with Leupold on everything-but am seriously considering a Triji 3-9x40 anyone here have thoughts on Leupold vs Trijicon?
I love the Triji post sight but I didn't like the glass relative to the VX6. On the plus side though, the Triji is lighter and can be had in a 1" tube. There aren't many (any?) 1" lighted reticle scopes on the market so that's a big deal for the Triji.
Leupold has the best eye relief, a excellent selling point! The click adjustments work wonderful! Trijicon doesn't have great eye relief.
I guess how much power you feel comfortable with is very different from hunter to hunter.
Some feel they can't use a 3x at close range as everything becomes just brown, black or whatever color the animal has. So they want 1.25x for that.
I have used 3x on a shotgun and shot clays with it and I have no problems to use 6x at very close range and still put the bullet where it should be, but I still want the ability to crank the scope down to 3x on my 375Ruger in case I suddenly find myself in a bad situation on a DG hunt.
When I use my 375Ruger on a hunt, I don't bring any other gun and use that for everything. Because of this I prefer to have the ability to crank up to scope to at least 9x for long shots at small animals.
I have a Leupold 3-9x50 on it now.
I would prefer to have 12x and if I was going to buy a new scope for my 375Ruger now, I would buy the 3-12x50 Zeiss Duralyt.
If I was going to use the 375 as a everyday gun on any animals...that would make a fine scope!Quote:

I think that if you had a 3-12X scope on a 375, then you would have to have detachable mounts if you were following up in the brush.
I actually think in any thick brush situation a scope is going to be a problem.

Isn't that one of the primary reasons for having detachable scope mounts?
